iRest Yoga Nidra is a trauma-informed, guided meditation practice that supports deep rest, nervous system regulation, and reconnection with inner resources. It offers a way of resting that is both deeply restorative and psychologically safe, even for people who find traditional meditation difficult.

Unlike practices that require concentration, effort, or “clearing the mind,” iRest invites you to rest exactly as you are. Nothing needs to be changed or fixed. You are guided to notice sensations, emotions, thoughts, and images with curiosity and compassion, allowing the nervous system to gradually settle and reorganise.

What is iRest Yoga Nidra?

iRest (Integrative Restoration) is a modern, evidence-based form of Yoga Nidra developed specifically for working with stress, trauma, and emotional overwhelm. It is widely used in therapeutic, medical, and trauma-recovery settings.

During an iRest practice, you are guided through a series of gentle steps that support:

  • a sense of safety and grounding

  • awareness of the body and breath

  • access to inner resources

  • the ability to stay present with experience without becoming overwhelmed

You remain awake and aware throughout, resting comfortably while being guided.

How iRest Supports Healing

Many people living with anxiety, trauma, or chronic stress spend long periods in a state of high alert, tension, or shutdown. iRest works from the bottom up, supporting the nervous system to move toward balance rather than relying on effort or willpower.

Regular practice can help:

  • calm the stress response

  • reduce anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • improve sleep and energy levels

  • increase resilience and emotional regulation

  • foster a sense of inner steadiness and self-connection

Importantly, iRest does not require you to revisit or retell traumatic experiences in order to heal.

iRest and Trauma

iRest is particularly well suited to people who have experienced trauma, including developmental or complex trauma. The practice is:

  • choice-based — you are always invited, never instructed

  • paced gently — nothing is forced or rushed

  • non-exposure-based — there is no requirement to engage with traumatic memories

You are encouraged to stay connected to present-moment resources, such as the felt sense of support, grounding, or inner safety. If difficult sensations or emotions arise, they are approached with spaciousness and compassion, always within your window of tolerance.

For many people, iRest offers a first experience of rest that feels genuinely safe.

How I Use iRest in My Practice

I integrate iRest Yoga Nidra into my work in a number of ways, depending on your needs and readiness.

This may include:

  • using iRest as a stand-alone practice to support nervous system regulation

  • incorporating iRest as a resource before or after EMDR processing

  • offering brief guided practices within therapy sessions

  • sharing recordings to support you between sessions

iRest can be especially helpful if you are not yet ready to engage in trauma processing, or if talking therapies alone have felt overwhelming or insufficient.

Who iRest May Be Helpful For

iRest may be supportive if you are experiencing:

  • anxiety or chronic stress

  • emotional overwhelm or burnout

  • trauma or PTSD

  • difficulty sleeping or switching off

  • a sense of disconnection from your body or emotions

  • a longing for rest that feels safe and nourishing

No prior experience of meditation or yoga is needed.
